Some photo days just fill your heart—and this was one of them. I spent the day at one of my favorite family photo locations near Hickory, NC: the charming and historic Murray’s Mill in Catawba, NC. It’s just a quick 20-minute drive from Hickory and absolutely perfect for families who love golden light, peaceful backdrops, and natural beauty.
On this day, I photographed two amazing families at Murray’s Mill—the Barkers in the morning and the Smiths in the evening—and each session had its own unique glow and story.
The Barker Family – A Cozy Morning by the Mill
The Barker Family’s session started in the soft, golden morning light filtering gently through the trees at Murray’s Mill. Having had the privilege of photographing their wedding, newborn, and one-year portraits, this session felt like continuing a beautiful visual story that began years ago. Their little boy’s playful energy filled the space, and the session unfolded with comfort and ease—like catching up with old friends. Capturing families as they grow and change is truly one of my favorite parts of being a family photographer serving the Triad and surrounding areas.
The Smith Family – Golden Hour Glow
Later that day, the Smith family joined me at Murray’s Mill for their evening session. I love how the barn and surrounding fields soak up the warm, golden light of sunset, creating a magical atmosphere. Baby Josie, the newest member of their family, was the shining star of the session. The mood was relaxed, joyful, and full of love. As always, it’s such an honor to document this special season of life as a family photographer near Hickory. I genuinely love what I do!
